How to Grill Corn on a Weber Charcoal Grill

Basic Grilled Corn Recipe

We have some family that lives in Iowa, so over the years we’ve slowly but surely fallen in love with fresh corn.  It’s such a tasty veggie for any meal – and all our kids eat it!

But me being who I am, can’t just boil them in water on the stove.

That’s boring.  So, off to the grill with them.

Prepare the Corn for the Grill

The first step is to soak the corn in water, husks and all, for 20 minutes.  This will keep the husks from burning.

You can grill the corn either with or without the husks.   Keeping he husks on will cook the corn in a more gentle manner as it steams inside the husk.  Taking the husks off lets the corn take up flavor from the fire and smoke.

Personally I like to take the husks off before grilling.

Before you put the corn on the grill drizzle the ears with some olive oil and a dash of salt & pepper.  That’s all you need.

Prepare the Grill with High Heat

Set up your Weber kettle for direct high heat by arranging a chimney full of charcoal across the middle of the bottom grate.  Keep a little space on the charcoal grate empty of charcoal so you will have a cool spot to move the corn to if it starts to scorch.

Keep your top and bottom air vents completely open.

Grill the Corn

Place the corn on the cooking grate directly over the charcoal and close the lid.

Let the corn grill for 2-3 minutes then use a pair of tongs to roll them around.

Keep the corn moving every 2-3 minutes and let the ears cook until golden brown.  Depending upon how hot your fire is this will take between 10 and 15 minutes.

  1. I know this may be a given to some, but do you leave the Corn in its husks when you soak it or strip the husks from the Corn first?

  2. I pull the husks down, remove the silk, smear with butter, then sprinkle with J&D’s bacon salt, fold the husks back up and grill. Delish!

  3. Grilled corn is a favorite around our household in the summer. We baste the ears in olive oil and a smidge of butter, but then add sea salt and various spices for some extra flavor. Lastly, we wrap them in tin foil and throw them on the grill for about 10-15 mins…and once you have them this way, you’ll never want boiled corn again!
