The Importance of Tongs

BBQ TongsGo ahead. Laugh. You think I’m joking, don’t you? Well I’m NOT. A good pair of tongs is one of the most important tools you’ll ever acquire.

In the past 10 years I bet I’ve been through 5 pairs of tongs. Some good, some terrible. One of them was so bad it was demoted to hot coal arrangement and nothing more. So, what the heck is the difference?

First, I highly recommend the self-locking tongs. This really improves the quality of your grilling life. If you have a quality, long pair of tongs, they take up a ton of room when open, so practically speaking, being able to lock them closed is nice. This feature also makes it easier to hang them off a hook on your grill.

And I prefer longer tongs mainly for help picking up racks of ribs.  Standard length tongs would suffice for many other meats, but ribs require more length.

Now, the most important part of probably any BBQ tool you will buy: Rounded edges. Do NOT use tongs that have pointed edges! Sure they look cool and yea, I like sharp stuff too. I get it. But they pierce your meat and let out precious juices. This is an easy way to destroy all your hard work. You really want to be sure you have nice, smooth, rounded edges to your tongs so when you pick up your tasty meat it keeps all the happiness trapped inside, and not pouring onto your hot coals.

Told you I wasn’t joking.
