Grilling Frozen Burgers

Grilling frozen burgers is actually pretty easy.  There are lots of different brands of frozen burgers but the general cooking instructions are all the same.

Here are the steps to follow that are provided by most brands:

  • Keep the burgers frozen until ready to grill. Do not thaw the burgers.
  • Pre-heat your grill to Medium-High heat for 10 minutes.
  • Place the frozen patties on the grill.
  • Close the lid and grill for 7 minutes.
  • Flip the burgers, close the lid and grill for 7 minutes.
  • The burgers are done when they reach an internal temperature of 160-165F.

Tips to Make Your Grilled Frozen Hamburgers Better

You can follow the basic manufacturer’s instructions above and end up with an okay burger or you can add a few extra steps and end up with an amazing burger.

The extra steps are broken down below into things to do while the burgers are grilling and what to do after the burgers are done.

While The Burgers Are Grilling

I modify the grilling instructions and change how often the burgers are flipped and how they are seasoned.  More specifically, the burgers get flipped four times and flavor is added after every flip.

I put the burgers on my Weber Traveler gas grill over Medium High heat and flip every three minutes.

After the burgers are flipped the first time they have started to thaw out and have some grease and moisture on the surface.  This is the perfect time to season the first side of the burger.

You can season the burgers with anything you want but I suggest you pick from:

Go on the light side with the seasoning, maybe use about a half teaspoon per burger.

Grill and Flip Every Three Minutes

After the burgers are flipped the second time you can now season the other side of the patty.

After the burgers are flipped the third time you can baste the top side of the patty with Worcestershire sauce which pairs really well with the natural flavor of the beef.

After the burgers have flipped the fourth time you can add the cheese and let the burgers finish grilling to an internal temperature of 160-165F.

Add Cheese to the Grilled Burgers

The simple act of flipping more frequently and adding a layer of flavor with every flip will make a massive difference in how you burgers turn out!

After The Burgers Are Done

Now that you have perfectly grilled your burgers it is time to set them up to become even better.

There are three parts to an amazing burger and they are:

  1. Perfectly Grilled Patty (Done)
  2. Great Selection of Toppings
  3. The Toasted Bun

Let’s talk about toppings!  Standard offerings at my barbecues include:

Wet Stuff:

  • Mayo
  • Mustard (Yellow and Dijon)
  • Ketchup
  • Barbecue Sauce (Sweet Baby Ray’s and Head Country Hot)
  • Steak Sauce

Veggies:

  • Lettuce
  • Pickles
  • Tomatoes
  • Sautéed Mushrooms
  • Onion
  • Pickled Jalapeno Slices

It is easy to put out a big spread of toppings and it lets people have a fun experience choosing their favorites and experimenting with new combinations.  This is a simple step in showing abundance that will elevate the burger experience.

The next part is equally as simple and has a massive impact on the burger experience and that is to toast the buns!

The difference between a burger on a toasted vs non-toasted is night and day.  The little extra crunch you get from a toasted bun provides a textural contrast the truly elevates a burger.

Get those buns onto the grill and toast them for about two minutes and your burgers and your guests will thank you!

Why I Love Frozen Burgers

Frozen burgers are awesome for several reasons.

It is super convenient to keep a box of burgers in the freezer and pull out as few or as many as you want for a quick weeknight dinner.  This is so much nicer than having a bunch of thawed patties in your refrigerator and stressing out that you need to grill them in the next couple of days before they go bad.

I also love that they have been formed and texturized in a manner that keeps their shape while being grilled.  These burgers do not shrink up and form big bulges in the middle.  The burgers stay flat and, as a result, cook evenly while grilling.  They would also do great if you wanted to smoke some burgers on your pellet grill!
